A Groundcover classic, made for those who prefer their footwear simple, substantial and built for everyday use.

The Traditional Veldskoen Boot stays close to the practical South African footwear that inspired generations of veldskoen. Handmade in KwaZulu-Natal, it is crafted from supple brown floater leather, chosen for its combination of softness, durability and natural character.

The traditional three-eyelet design gives the boot its distinctive, uncomplicated shape, while a genuine leather insole provides breathable comfort underfoot. A thick black Forest sole adds a robust finish and gives this style its more substantial stance.

More traditional and distinctly masculine in character than our Veldskoen Chukkas, it is an easy boot to wear with jeans, chinos or workwear, whether you're heading into town or out into the countryside.

A proper leather boot, made with purpose and designed to get better with wear.

  • Care

Wipe away dirt with a soft, damp cloth and allow the leather to dry naturally away from direct heat. Treat periodically with a suitable leather food or conditioning cream to nourish the leather and maintain its suppleness.

If the boots become wet, allow them to dry slowly at room temperature before applying any leather treatment.

  • Sizing

True to size for most. The Traditional Veldskoen has an accommodating shape with good room through the forefoot.

Refer to our UK and EU size guide above the add to cart button for the best fit.

  • Delivery & returns

Fast UK delivery from our Bath dispatch centre. Free exchanges on unworn boots. Returns accepted within 14 days. Simple and straightforward.

  • Fit

An accommodating fit with a naturally rounded toe and comfortable room through the forefoot. Supple floater leather adapts naturally to your foot with wear.

  • Sole

Thick Forest sole in black. Robust and hard-wearing, with a defined heel and practical tread that gives the Traditional Veldskoen its substantial underfoot feel.

  • Materials

Supple brown floater leather upper with a naturally textured grain. Genuine leather insole for breathable underfoot comfort. Finished with brass eyelets and a thick black Forest sole.

Why We Made This Boot

Some designs don't need reinventing.

The Traditional Veldskoen stays close to the straightforward footwear at the heart of Groundcover's South African heritage. The emphasis is on good leather, uncomplicated construction, comfort and durability rather than unnecessary detail. Groundcover itself describes this version as an attempt to remain as true as possible to the roots of the original veldskoen.

For our UK collection, it offers a more traditional alternative to the Veldskoen Chukka. The grained brown leather, substantial black sole and classic shape create a distinctly masculine boot with the versatility to move easily between everyday and countryside wear.

It's footwear made to be used, looked after and kept.

Where It Works Best

Everyday Wear

Supple leather and an uncomplicated shape make this an easy boot to reach for day after day. Wear it with jeans, chinos or cords without having to think too hard about it.

Countryside & Rural Life

This is where the veldskoen's practical origins make sense. The robust sole and substantial construction are well suited to country lanes, village life and everyday outdoor wear.

Work & Practical Wear

The understated brown leather and sturdy construction suit environments where you want something smarter than a trainer without wearing a formal shoe.

Weekends Away

A useful do-most-things boot when you don't want to pack several pairs. Comfortable for exploring during the day and easy to wear out afterwards..

Casual Days Out

The darker brown leather and traditional shape give it enough character to stand on its own without dominating what you're wearing.

Traditional by design. Practical by nature.

FAQs

1. How does the Traditional Veldskoen differ from the Veldskoen Chukka?

The difference is primarily one of character and construction rather than fit.

Our Veldskoen Chukka has a cleaner, more relaxed silhouette and is designed as a versatile unisex style. The Traditional Veldskoen has a more substantial black sole with a defined heel, grained brown leather and a distinctly traditional men's boot appearance.

Both share the straightforward comfort and craftsmanship associated with Groundcover. The choice is really about how you want to wear them.

2. What is floater leather?

Floater leather has a naturally pronounced grain and a soft, supple handle. Groundcover selected it for the Traditional Veldskoen because it combines comfort with durability, while giving each pair plenty of natural leather character.

3. Is the Traditional Veldskoen comfortable from new?

The floater leather is naturally supple, so this isn't intended to feel like a heavy, rigid work boot. Groundcover owners specifically comment on the soft leather, comfortable fit and quality of the materials.

Like any leather footwear, it will continue to adapt to your feet with wear.

4. Can I wear the Traditional Veldskoen in wet weather?

It can handle normal damp and changeable conditions when properly cared for, but it is not a waterproof boot. Regular leather treatment will nourish the leather and improve its resistance to everyday moisture.

5. Is it suitable for walking?

Yes, for everyday walking, countryside use and general outdoor wear. Its substantial sole, comfortable shape and leather insole make it a practical walking companion.

It isn't intended to replace a technical hiking boot for demanding terrain.
