Part boot, part shoe, the Thuli is one of Groundcover's most versatile leather styles.

Cut just above the ankle with a slim profile and understated shape, it has the structure of a boot without the bulk. Handmade in KwaZulu-Natal from oily brown leather, the Thuli pairs a clean leather upper with a genuine leather insole and thin Forest Crepe sole for comfortable everyday wear.

Its refined shape makes it particularly easy to dress up or down. Wear it with jeans or chinos at the weekend, or pair it with smarter trousers when the occasion calls for something more considered.

The Thuli is a unisex Groundcover style, although its clean lines and understated brown leather have made it particularly popular with men.

Smart enough when you need it. Relaxed enough when you don't.

  • Care

Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth and allow the leather to dry naturally away from direct heat. Treat regularly with a suitable leather food or conditioning cream to nourish the leather and maintain its suppleness.

If the boots become wet, allow them to dry slowly at room temperature before applying any leather treatment.

  • Sizing

True to size for most, with a narrow fit that is generous in length.

If you are between sizes or prefer additional room through the forefoot, refer to our UK and EU size guide above the add to cart button before ordering.

  • Delivery & returns

Fast UK delivery from our Bath dispatch centre. Free exchanges on unworn boots. Returns accepted within 14 days. Simple and straightforward.

  • Fit

A narrow, streamlined fit with generous length through the foot. The slim profile gives the Thuli its refined appearance and makes it particularly well suited to narrower feet.

  • Sole

Thin Forest Crepe sole in Toffee. Flexible and understated, with a lower-profile appearance that complements the Thuli's cleaner, more refined silhouette.

  • Materials

Oily brown leather upper with natural character and a supple feel. Genuine leather insole for breathable underfoot comfort. Finished with a thin Forest Crepe sole in Toffee

Why We Made This Boot

Not every boot needs to look rugged.

The Thuli was created as a more refined interpretation of traditional South African leather footwear. Cutting it just above the ankle gives it the reassuring structure of a boot, while its slim shape and lower-profile sole keep the overall appearance closer to a smart casual shoe.

That combination is what makes the Thuli particularly useful. It's comfortable enough to become an everyday favourite, understated enough for work and smart enough for occasions when your usual casual footwear doesn't quite cut it.

For us, that's the Thuli's strength: one pair, very few rules.

Where It Works Best

Everyday Wear

Comfortable, understated and easy to combine with what you already own. The Thuli works particularly well with jeans, chinos and cords for straightforward everyday dressing.

Smart Casual

This is where the slimmer silhouette comes into its own. Pair it with smarter trousers and a shirt or knitwear when you want something more polished without reaching for formal shoes.

Work & Office

The clean brown leather and low-profile sole give the Thuli enough refinement for many workplaces while retaining the comfort and character of a casual leather boot.

Weekends Away

A particularly useful travelling companion when packing space is limited. Wear it during the day, then keep it on when heading out for dinner in the evening.

His or Hers

The Thuli is a genuinely versatile unisex design. Its simple proportions work across different wardrobes, whether styled with denim and chinos or something altogether more individual.

One boot. Plenty of ways to wear it.

FAQs

1. Is the Thuli a shoe or a boot?

Technically, it's a boot. The leather upper extends just above the ankle, but its slim silhouette and low-profile sole give it much of the appearance and versatility of a leather shoe. That's one of the things that makes the Thuli distinctive.

2. Is the Thuli suitable for men and women?

Yes. The Thuli is a unisex Groundcover style and can be worn by both men and women. Our oily brown leather version has proved particularly popular with men, but the design itself works comfortably across both men's and women's wardrobes.

3. How does the Thuli fit?

The Thuli is one of our narrower-fitting styles and is generous in length. It has a more streamlined shape than many traditional casual boots, so customers with particularly broad feet may prefer another Groundcover style.

4. Can I wear the Thuli with smarter clothes?

Absolutely. That's one of its strengths. The slim profile, brown leather and understated sole allow it to work particularly well with chinos and smarter trousers, while still feeling completely natural with jeans.

5. Is the Thuli suitable for walking?

The Thuli is designed primarily as an everyday lifestyle boot rather than specialist walking footwear. Its leather insole and flexible Forest Crepe sole make it comfortable for normal daily walking, but for longer countryside walks or more demanding terrain, the Berg would be the more appropriate Groundcover choice.
