Inside Groundcover
Groundcover was born from a lifelong passion for leatherwork and a commitment to meaningful craftsmanship. Founders Justin and Amanda McCarthy met young and shared a drive for quality, purpose and community. After years of travelling the world selling leather goods, they returned to Africa in the mid-1980s and settled in Lesotho, where they focused on working with development projects—teaching the leather-tanning process and sharing the art of artisanal craft.
Our Story
Beginnings
In 1990, Justin and Amanda McCarthy settled in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands of South Africa and opened what is still the Groundcover workshop and store in Curry’s Post. As the business grew, so did the community around it. Groundcover became one of the founding members of what is now the Midlands Meander — a celebrated craft route — and our team expanded from just four makers to a skilled group of thirty.
Growth
From those early days, Groundcover continued to develop both its craft and its community. As demand grew, so did the capabilities of our workshop and the opportunities available to the people around us. What started as a small workshop became an anchor for local skills, employment and craftsmanship.
Evolution
Groundcover’s story has carried forward through the next generation. Today, Daniel and Angela lead the company with fresh energy and a commitment to the values that have shaped the brand since the beginning: purposeful making, responsible growth and meaningful impact. Their approach builds on the foundations laid decades ago, while preparing Groundcover for the years ahead.
Heritage
While much has changed over time, the essence of our craft remains constant. We’ve grown into a well-loved, sustainable footwear maker known for original, finely handcrafted leather shoes — created with care, skill and integrity. Our commitment to honest materials and traditional techniques continues to guide everything we make.
Family
Our greatest strength has always been our people. Many of our artisans have been with Groundcover for decades, and together we share deep experience, diverse skills and a genuine love for the craft. Our size allows us to remain hands-on, creative and attentive, mastering a range of constructions and techniques that give each pair its character and reliability.
United Kingdom
We’re excited to bring Groundcover to the UK — our new home from our base in Bath. UK customers now enjoy local support, local delivery and the reassurance that every purchase is covered by UK consumer laws. It’s the start of a new chapter for us, and we’re proud to share our tried-and-tested styles with a community we’re looking forward to growing right here.
How we make our shoes
All our designs are our own, shaped by the distinctive Groundcover approach to craft and fit. Over the years, we’ve developed a considered range of lasts to suit different constructions and foot types, ensuring comfort and durability from the ground up.Each style begins with careful development and testing before we move into full sizing and pattern work. It’s a slow, deliberate process that allows us to refine the shape, balance and feel of every boot before it becomes part of our collection.
The Next Chapter
Groundcover continues to grow with the same values that shaped us from the start. We’re proud to bring that spirit to the UK and look forward to walking this next chapter with you.
